Buying construction chemicals for a live project is very different from picking up a can at a hardware shop. Quantities are larger, specifications matter, and a wrong or delayed material can hold up an entire site. This guide covers what project buyers should know.
Know the main categories
Construction chemicals span several families, each solving a different problem:
- Waterproofing — integral additives, liquid membranes and coatings for roofs, walls and wet areas.
- Concrete admixtures — plasticisers and accelerators that improve workability, strength or set time.
- Repair mortars & micro-concrete — polymer-modified mixes for restoring damaged concrete.
- Grouts & anchors — for tiles, machine bases and structural fixing.
- Sealants & joint systems — PU, silicone and polysulphide sealants for expansion joints and gaps.
- Industrial flooring & surface hardeners — for warehouses and factory floors.
You can see how a real range is organised on our product categories page.
Specify before you source
Match the product to the substrate, exposure and performance the drawing or consultant demands — not just the brand name. Confirm the system (primer + membrane + protection), the coverage per coat, the number of coats and the curing time, because these drive the total quantity and the site programme. When in doubt, ask the supplier for the technical datasheet.
Plan quantities, pack sizes and lead time
Project-grade materials come in larger pack sizes than retail (for example 20–50 kg/litre packs), and some are supplied only in “Not for Retail” packs. Order against a measured take-off plus a sensible wastage allowance, and confirm lead time early — specialist items may not be held in retail stock. Staggering delivery to match the programme avoids both site congestion and material sitting exposed on site.
GST and invoicing for registered businesses
Construction chemicals are generally taxed at standard GST rates (most fall at 18%, though the exact rate depends on the product’s HSN classification — confirm on the invoice). Registered businesses can typically claim input tax credit on these purchases, so a proper tax invoice with your GSTIN, correct HSN codes and a clear description is essential for your accounting. Always buy against a GST invoice rather than an informal bill.
Why the supplier matters
For construction chemicals, an authorised distributor de-risks the job in three ways: genuine, in-warranty material (counterfeit waterproofing is a real problem); correct technical guidance on system and coverage; and reliable project supply with GST invoicing. An unauthorised or purely price-led source can cost far more in rework if the material underperforms.
